Applicants for membership in the Special Forces Association must provide supporting documentation for eligibility purposes and to avoid delays in processing; applications received without documentation will be returned as incomplete.
General Members are those members who served or are serving honorably as a Special Forces Soldier and were awarded the Green Beret and or Special Forces Tab (post 1985) upon completion of the qualification course. Supporting documents for active duty Soldiers may include their ERB / ORB or official orders (assignment, promotions, graduation, etc.) showing MOS designation, and standard name line with Social Security Number. For veterans or retirees applicants must include a copy of the DD-214 to confirm their term of service as Honorable. must accompany all applications submitted which provide undeniable proof of Special Forces qualification. More than one substantiating document is not required, but maybe helpful in case of potential questions that arise.
Associate Members are those members who served or are serving honorably in an Army Special Forces unit and served for at least two years with an Army Special Forces unit, in a combat zone with an Army Special Forces unit for at least six months, or have contributed in a unique and definable way if the time periods are not met. Supporting documents for active duty Soldiers may include their ERB / ORB or official orders (assignment, promotion, authorization of ‘S’ indicator, etc.) showing MOS designation, and standard name line with Social Security Number. For veterans or retirees applicants must include a copy of the DD-214 to confirm their term of service as Honorable. More than one substantiating document is not required, but maybe helpful in case of potential questions that arise.
The ‘S’ indicator since 1998 is used to identify those Soldiers serving in a Special Forces unit but who are not Special Forces qualified. Prior to the establishment of the 18 series MOS in 1989, the ‘S’ indicator was used to identify all Special Forces qualified Soldiers within their own MOS branch for assignment purposes. Since the awarding of the 18 series MOS this is no longer needed for qualified Soldiers. This may cause confusion for an associate member applicant; the ‘S’ indicator on the application only applies to Special Forces qualified Soldiers prior to the awarding of their MOS in 1989.
Membership are either General or Associate and may be renewed annually through membership dues or one-time payment for lifetime. The amount for each can be found on the appropriate form below. A member in good standing may submit for the designation as a Decade Member; Decade Member is one who has served honorably in Special Forces for at least ten years or a combination of service within a Special Forces unit and the SF Association totaling ten years or more.
