SHARKMAN
I knew Charlie Hopkins for a while; less that some folks and more than others. I helped him with a couple of problems once, and we became friends. Everytime I saw him, he had a smile on his face. In fact the photo to the lower right demonstrates that ever glowing smile. He asked me to reenlisted him. It was an honor to be asked and an extreme pleasure to serve with him. He was a great soldier, leader, friend, and I have not forgotten him.
When people pass, folks can put up momuments, statutes, and all kinds of things. But in my opinion, the real tribute is what folks think of us, and how they feel about us. Charlie had a large number of friends who cared about him. Below are some of those comments that were on the old site.

Charlie Hopkins, former Tm Sgt for ODA 525 and later ODA 321, died on 25 Jan from injuries incured in motorcycle accident.
If you’re familiar with Desert Storm you’ll know that Charlie’s team was the one caught in Iraq and had to call in F-16s for CAS to save their collective ass. I have served in special ops units my entire career of 16+ years and have not met many men who personified the SF image and reputation as well as Charlie. No saint by any stretch but a good friend and a guy to have on your side when shit went bad.

Charlie Hopkins, was killed last night on his way home from Mike William’s going away party. He was travelling at a high rate of speed and hit the curb as he entered the “Zoo” round-about in Al Ain. His bike jumped the curb and hit a “give way” sign with such an impact that it broke the springer front end off. Charlie flew across the road and landed on the side walk that goes around the center of the round about, about 50 feet from the sign. His bike came to rest about 20 feet past him in the grass. It looks like he may have been looking at something on the bike or was distracted somehow because there were only 6 feet of light skid marks leading up to the curb.
The accident happened around 0330, but we did not find out about it until around 1500. The police found Charlie almost immediately after the accident and took him to Al Jimi hospital where he was pronounced DOA. The local police notified the Military Police but from there we do not know why we were not notified earlier.
Diana called looking for Charlie so Jim Magnuson and myself went and backtracked from the Hilton to Charlie’s house in separate cars. We did not find any trace of him so I called one of our local instructors, Thani, and asked him to call the police and see if there were any accidents reported.
Thani found out that there was an accident involving an American and a motorcycle, and that the victim had died. We then went to Al Jimi Hospital and made a positive identification.
Charlie died of multiple fractures to the head, hands and one leg according to the hospital report. He had a cut in his forehead and it appears he died instantly. He was wearing his helmet, goggles, black leather jacket, RRMC “T” shirt and jeans. He had a few beers at the party but was not drunk, he was his usual laughing and joking self as he got on his bike to leave.
Diana was working today in Dubai so we had to wait for her to come home to tell her. She took it very hard and wanted to go see Charlie before she would actually believe it was true. She saw him a few hours ago and she is still very upset but seems to be calming down a bit.
Rick Desmond, suggested a memorial service and Diana has asked that we do it on Sunday. It will be held here in Al Ain, but I do not know the time and exact place yet, as soon as I do we will get the word out.
The unit has been notified and folks are starting to pitch in and try to help in any way possible. I have been relieved of my regular duties at work and will be concentrating on helping Diana get Charlie and their things back home. Charlie’s body will be transfered to Zayed Military Hospital on Saturday and prepared for the trip home.
Diana made the remark tonight that Charlie went out the way he said he wanted to go. . . on his Harley. We will miss him . . .

I was with Charlie on 525 during the Gulf War. I saw his true character. He was a truly great leader, soldier and a hell of a friend. He was the true SF Soldier. Every time he returned from the U.A.E. he came by to see me. I planned on going over to the U.A.E. and working when I retire on Charlie’s recommendation. He loved what he did and was good at it. It was a shock to receive the news. He was one of the first NCOs to make a long-lasting impression on me when I came out of the Q Course. He could do all the important things well with an astounding ability to endure physical hardships. To this day I am indebted to him for his countless tradecraft lessons from which he had an inexhaustible supply.
But, in a greater sense, it was Charlie’s wounderful personality that made all our lives richer. His uplifting humor and genuine love for his fellow SF troopers is why we treasure his memory. Those of us who served with him could not help wanting to be more like him. I thank God for having known him, and I shall carry Charlie’s memory in my heart til the end of my days.

When I heard this information, I was hurt.
“Charlie B” and I spent over a decade on the same team. We grew up together as men. If there was any way to get things done, Charlie was the man. If I as the detachment commander needed a mission completed, communications, or a team sergeant, Charlie fit the bill. I saw Charlie 9 months ago at the Ft. Bragg, PX, he told me he was retired, happy and working abroad. He had his two sons with him and I was in a hurry to go back to a college class. I wish I would have taken a little more time. I wish I could of said to be careful, I miss you and love not only you, but your family. He said he never wanted to come back, his life was every thing he wanted. He said that SF had given him all the training and finally he was doing what he was suppose to do. 10 years is only a moment in time. He left me with a lot of memories. My “Best Ranger” buddy in competiion against the Rangers, pre-scuba training, skiing, halo operations and scuba. He was alway next to me on our operations to set the example, the first to charge the hill. He will alway be a professional memory, I sincerely wish his family well. To his sons, you have a father to be proud of, and to his wife, I’m truly sorry. To Charlie, I will never forget you and will always cherish the moments that you and I kicked some ass.

Charlie Hopkins was an old school Special Forces Soldier! He was, what every other SF soldier strived to be, he always took on the most difficult of challenges, and always excelled. A master at his craft, training hard, living hard and setting an example of a Special Forces Soldiers Life. When ODA 525’s Special Reconniassance mission became compromized 140 miles inside Iraq, I turned where every Commander would turn, To his team Sergeant. Charlie, Thank God you were the Team Sergeant for 525 before I got there! Your leadership and the stuff you had already shown those guys made my life so much easier. No matter what Winston Clough says, the “Sharkmen” already had “adult leadership” and it knew which way the battle really was. It was great to see you a couple of months ago and I do appreciate your offer to return to that part of the world – would have tremendously enjoyed your company. You are what SF used to be about. I had the pleasure of being Charlie’s Barber while he was on assignment to 3rd Army at Ft. Gillem,GA. Diana ( his wife) was a co-worker of mine and used to ask me to “Get the Scoop” on him. Well that situation panned out for the both of them and the rest was history. Through that relationship I got a chance to get to know him. The one thing that I’m going miss about Charlie the most is- his Spirit- I don’t know how else to describe it-but no matter whether we were drinking (Capt. Morgans), he was teaching me the fine art of shooting, getting a Haircut or telling me about some of his exploits-(because he knew I was a Huge Fan of Special Operations)………He was always the same- He just had this “ALL WILL BE WELL” type of aura that surrounded him and sucked you in no matter who you were- just by being in his general vicinity. I think that came across to everyone who ever met him. I’ve never met an individual like Charlie- He Lived Life like he wrote the F**kin’ Book. Charlie- I miss You ,buddy………….. When I first read Steve Stone’s message – like everyone else I was shocked. I last saw Charlie B. this past summer, in of all places ‘The Mouse Trap’ in TN. Charlie always seem to stop by the place on his way through TN, he always made time for his friends. We talked about his job overseas. He told me that he’d just come from 1/3d on a recruiting visit and had signed up two guys from the battalion. I told him that once I got there he was ‘persona non grata’ when it came to recruiting unless he got me a job first. He laughed and actually gave me the sales pitch to come work for him. Knowing Charlie, and his standard, I was felt privileged that he would offer. We laughed and shot the shit for a couple hours – making fun of Sheila’s new bar and her historical nature of hiring lazy bartenders. Mostly, Charlie talked about how he was enjoying working overseas, the old guys’ softball league and the opportunities it afforded his family. Charlie never missed a chance to talk about his family and the pride he had for them. Of Charlie’s history and exploits as a soldier, a leader, and hero there can be no doubt. I’m writing this to thank Charlie for that little bit of extra that he brought into my life. Although I may never live my life like Charlie – he showed me how life should be lived and enjoyed. From my first experiences of runnin’ with his crew (Jimbo, Kim, etc) and venturing into the ‘other’ bars in Clarkville, he taught me to live for the moment and to enjoy life’s every minute. I may not have been your best student brother, but I’ll always keep trying. I thank you brother for that extra you added to my life, and I grieve and mourn with your family and friends at your untimely passing. You’re the man Carlie B – and we’ll never forget. Hey Dad …this is your oldest son Lee… i can genuinely say that out of all the things that life has offered me, I valued and still do value you the most. You know the connection that we have had all of my life, and theres only one like that. Its been 4 and a half years since you passed but I still think of you every day as if u were still here. There was just something about you man that I really did love..you were always the highlight of my life and the best thing that I ever had, I know Brian and Joe feel the same way too, they loved you damn much. I think about you all the time and I just smile, your drive and determenation is living inside me now and Im proud and inspired by everything that you did with your soldier life. We never did talk much and I regret all the times that we didnt hang out together and that I did not take advantage of to talk to you, I guess it’s because Im a man now and I wish you were here, I would talk to you and drink a few beers for hours and then we could ride out on are harleys, I know if you were here that we would be riding together, but Im gonna keep on riding for now and you keep things under control in Val Hala …love you man.
